Valentine Order Form 2011

The SOUNDS OF THE SHENANDOAH chorus represents the Charles Town, West Virginia chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, which has an international membership of about 34,000 men in over 800 chapters in the United States, Canada, and about a dozen other countries.

Barbershop quartet singing began in the 1870s with Black southern quartets such as THE AMERICAN FOUR and THE HAMTOWN STUDENTS. From the beginning, the close harmony and improvisational style of a cappella singing was the major attraction.  The astute listener can appreciate the beautiful nature of close harmony and the resulting complex overtones and harmonies.  The properly balanced and tuned voices of a four-part quartet, ensemble, or chorus creates vocal music in its finest display.  Combined with the words of a ballad, or the uplifting verses of a traditional spiritual number, or the universal lines of a love story, or the words of a nostalgic song of yesteryear, or just the everyday joys of being alive, barbershop harmony can raise the experience to a new emotional level.

The SOUNDS OF THE SHENANDOAH, or SOS, is comprised of men ranging from the forties to the seventies, and from a large variety of occupations, both current and retired.  In 1998, 1999, and 2001, under the musical direction of Cal Sexton, the SOS won the Small Chorus Championship in the Southern Division of the Mid-Atlantic District of SPEBSQSA.  The chorus has placed second in the Small Chorus category in two of the other three years of competing.  The chorus is currently directed by Sally Wolf.

The members of the SOS chorus are proud to perform for you today.  One of our goals as a chorus is to encourage and promote the art of Barbershop singing in our communities.  If you have enjoyed our Barbershop harmony and think youd like to be a part of it, wed be glad to have you join us.  We meet Thursday evenings at 7:30 at the Charles Town Pres. Church (enter in the side) at 220 E. Washington St.  If you have a good ear for music, can sing in tune, and can learn quickly, then come sing with us!  Even if you cannot read music (some of our chorus members cant), we will show you how to sing in the Barbershop style.  For information, call 304-725-1518 or 304-264-4070.

The SOS chorus will perform for almost any occasion -- parties, banquets, meetings, conventions, etc.  Please call either of the above numbers.
